HOW MUCH GOD LOVES US

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

Day 171

“For we know how dearly God loves us,
because He has given us the Holy Spirit
to fill our hearts with His love”
Romans 5:5

Paul prayed that, “you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love really is” [Ephesians 3:18]. He prayed this because we deeply need to know that love God has for us. It is that love that sought us, called us and brought us home to Him.

God’s love is so powerful that it overcame us. We did not love Him. He first loved us. And then He put that love in us to love Him! Incredible! He saves our wretched being and then enables us to love Him. This is the glory of our God – He brought into existence what didn’t exist before.

Now we are filled with His love to love Him. And not just Him, but all men. We can pour His love out to others as He did to us because love conquers in the end. It covers a multitude of sins. There is no excuse for us not to do this. It is His love and He has given it to us through the Holy Spirit who will empower us to love. It is a choice we make – to love in His strength. And when you pour out His love He will fill you in a way that there is no end of love. And this is the glory of God – to love Him and all men.

“May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each
other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you”
1 Thessalonians 3:12

MERCY IN EXCESS

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Day 170

“For as the heaven is high above the earth,
so great is His mercy toward them that fear Him”
Psalm 103:11

How high is the heaven above the earth? How far is the east from the west? This is God’s mercy for us. There is no limit and no boundaries. It is difficult for our minds to grasp this mercy – a mercy in excess. Unfortunately, our nature believes the opposite. We think anything we receive is based on behavior. If we are good, we receive good things. If we are bad, we will receive bad things. Sin, failure, and faults in our life mean rejection. Not so – these are false beliefs

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” [Romans 8:35]. You belong to our God – you are His child, born of Him – chosen, called and destined to be His glory. But, you say, what about my sins, failures, faults? And to that, the word declares, “He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities” [Psalm 103:10]. Yes, who shall separate us from Him? He has made a provision in the blood of Jesus Christ to cover our sins. What greater evidence of His love and mercy is there than that sacrifice on the cross?

And your sins? “As far as the east is from the west, so far hath He removed our transgressions from us” [Psalm 103:12]. True to His nature, He forgives and removes our sins. He heals the wounds and fills us with His Holy Spirit – a seal – yes, a seal of our inheritance. He has sealed us for all eternity as His! Mercy in excess.

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, O Lord my God,
Thou art very great; thou art clothed with honor and majesty”
Psalm 104:1

SOVEREIGN GRACE

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Day 169

“The Lord reigneth;
let the people tremble”
Psalm 99:1

God’s plan and purposes were not defeated when man fell. His plan and purposes are not thwarted by the wickedness of man or by the devil. The world, the flesh and sin do not change, delay, or defeat God’s plan. No, there is nothing, absolutely nothing on earth, in the universe or the heavens that can or will stop the fulfillment of God’s Divine plan. God is sovereign and rules over all according to His purposes.

The Lamb was “slain from the foundation of the world” [Rev. 13:8] with the explicit purpose to rescue man from sin and wickedness. God had provision before man knew he needed it! In fact, neither man nor the devil can resist God. The psalmist declared, “Surely the wrath of man shall praise Thee: the remainder of wrath shalt Thou restrain” [Psalm 76:10].

All this magnifies His grace. In spite of rebellion, wickedness and sin, grace is offered free to us who are undeserving and not worthy of it. Not only is grace free, it is sovereign – it is bestowed on whom He pleases. He breaks down the walls of sin and resistance. He stands against the opposition of the human will not to serve Him. He subdues the flesh of man and in love causes us to love Him. It is irresistible grace. And our being chosen manifests His glory.

“He hath chosen us in Him before
the foundation of the world . . .to the
praise of His glory of grace, wherein He
hath made us accepted in the Beloved”
Ephesians 1:4-6

RESTRAINING GRACE

Day 168

“He sent His word, and healed them,
and delivered them from their destructions”
Psalm 107:20

Jesus has told us that “out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies” [Matthew 15:16]. Christians sin. Some continue to sin. Some backslide. Anyone who has read the Bible can easily see that God’s people struggle with sin. Some of the stories expose all of it, such as David’s lust leading to adultery and then murder. Yet, he was God’s man.

Does God love you less because you sin? Does He abandon you? Condemn you? Far from it for His love is unconditional. And love covers a multitude of sins. He Himself said we are to forgive seventy times seven. He is a jealous God and He will not permit His children to be lost. We may go the course when we sin, but God will bring us to an end. Hosea clearly outlines this.

His love causes Him to put a restraining grace on us where we can go only so far. He said to Job, “Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further” – He has set boundaries that we cannot cross. And His love compels Him to pursue us. In His time He will send His word and heal us and deliver us from our own self-destruction. It’s called grace (help) and mercy (covering). In the end we will glorify Him for His goodness.

“O Give thanks unto the Lord,
for He is good: for His mercy
endureth for ever”
Psalm 107:1

TAKING UP THE CROSS

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

Day 167

“Carrying the cross . . . Jesus”
John 19:17

Simon of Cyrene had just come from the country to Jerusalem. He encounters a crowd following Jesus carrying a cross as He was headed to His crucifixion. Simon stood near the front of the crowd to see Him. Tired, beaten, mocked for hours after His trial, Jesus was struggling with carrying the cross. The soldiers then compelled Simon to help in carrying the cross.

It’s told that Simon was reluctant and initially refused to carry the cross. That is why he was finally forced by the soldiers to do it. Undoubtedly he knew who Jesus was. Why did he have to be forced? Did he know what was happening? Jesus said, “If any man come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me” [Matthew 16:24]. Every one of us is called to take up the cross. We are to deny ourselves and lose our life. How opposed this is to our world that says to affirm ourselves, build our self-worth, etc.! To know Him we must lose our self-life and put on Christ. It requires a cross, the cross that Christ bore to set us free.

Literature reports later that Simon and his children became Christians. Simon, even though he was forced, found eternal grace and was redeemed. He may have come to Jerusalem for other purposes, but he had a Divine Appointment that day. It was a cross that he shied away from, but in the end he was saved through it.

“Whosoever will lose his life
for my sake shall find it”
Matthew 16:25

THE POWER OF GRACE

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Day 166

“While we were still weak, at the right time
Christ died for the ungodly . . . But God
proves His love for us in that while we
still were sinners Christ died for us”
Romans 5:6-8

Even if we understand grace, it is still difficult to grasp the fullness of its meaning to us. There is a never-ending drive in the nature of man to believe he must do something to gain anything. But the ultimate and complete truth about grace is that there is nothing, absolutely nothing, we can do to gain it. God has given us grace freely, and as John Timmer says, grace is a scandal. It is a scandal to man.

Was Paul looking for God as he rode his horse to find Christians and punish or kill them? Was Matthew looking for Christ while collecting taxes? Were you looking for Christ when he came? No, we were dead in our sins! Yet, God comes to us before we go to Him. Yes, it is God who seeks us. He found Abraham as an old man, Moses on the backside of a mountain, David in the pasture, Gideon hiding, Zaccheus in the tree, Peter fishing, and Lazarus in a grave. Not one of these, including you, can or could do anything to make yourself right with God.

Grace, oh, what a great offense against our arrogance, pride and self-sufficiency! It is God Himself that has made you right through the bloody sacrifice of His Son Jesus Christ! He came to us. He first loved us. He initiated the process. He called us out of death by grace. And the power of that grace saved us.

“To the praise of the glory of His grace,
wherein He hath made us accepted in the Beloved”
Ephesians 1:6

GOD’S JUSTICE

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

Day 165

“For the day of the Lord is near”
Obadiah 15

It all began with a grudge. Jacob had cheated his brother out of his birthright and Esau’s descendants, the Edomites, still held it against the Israelites. When Israel wanted to pass through their country they saw the opportunity and refused. And when Israel was later captured, they rejoiced in delight.

The Edomites lived in a rock fortress and made their homes high in the mountains. They were virtually impenetrable and took pride in that fact. But, the Lord had other plans. He is a jealous God and they struck at His people. They had committed violence to their relatives. Obadiah received a vision from the Lord to assemble the armies against Edom. The rest is history. God judged and destroyed them. He permitted their own evil to come back on them.

We may find ourselves unjustly persecuted in many ways. It may be in school, the workplace, our neighborhood. Injustice reigns everywhere. Few of us escape it. BUT, we have a Father who watches over and protects us. Even if we should suffer for a time, He will deliver us out of it. He is a true Father who will not forsake His children. Obadiah is living proof of it.

“For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish”
Psalm 1:6

GOD’S TOOL BOX

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

Day 164

“Now you have every spiritual gift you need”
1 Corinthians 1:7

There are many different beliefs about God’s gifts, but one thing is sure – He has given us many gifts. These gifts are to equip us until the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. God has given us everything we need to live our lives until His return.

Think of it this way; God’s gifts are a like a work person’s tool box. Whatever the person needs to execute their work, they only need to reach into the box and get the right tool. The right tool at the right time is always there for the skilled work person. There is more; the finished work is the testimony of the work person, not their tools. How we admire fine furniture, not the tools that made it.

God’s gifts should always give Him the glory. When Jesus used the gifts, He revealed the character and nature of the Father, bringing Him Glory. So, we too are to use His gifts as needed and bring Glory to the Father.

“That all nations might believe and obey Him -
to the only wise God be glory forever
through Jesus Christ! Amen.
Romans 16:26b-27

TRUE COMMUNION

Friday, August 13th, 2010

Day 163

“Is not the bread that we break
a participation in the body of Christ?”
1 Corinthians 10:16

Communion cannot be reduced to a liturgical practice or ritual. In fact, Paul warns us that we are to discern the body of Christ. And he points out that some of those that haven’t are weak and sick. This is a very serious warning. The body of Christ is the church, its many members are one body.

True communion relates to the body of Christ and our participation in it. At the Last Supper Christ humbled himself and became a servant washing the feet of the disciples. He told them to do the same. He chose to have a meal together and be a servant. We are called to do the same – love others more than ourselves, honor others, be a servant laying down our lives, owe no man any debt except love.

This is true communion; I lay down my life and live for others, and build them up in Christ. God gave us the body of Christ to work out our salvation while we walk this earth. As we participate in it, partaking of one loaf, though we are many, we find communion with Christ and our brothers and sisters.

“How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together
in unity! It is like a precious oil poured on the
head, running down on the beard . . . For there
the Lord bestows His blessing. Even life forevermore”
Psalm 133

HIS PRESENCE

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Day 162

“I will not forget you”
Isaiah 49:15

Ever go through troubled times or long periods of dryness? We do not sense God’s presence or nearness and depending on our understanding, may believe God is distant, mad at us or has withdrawn from us. None of these are true.

God said, “I will remember you.”

He remembers because He loves us.

His love is a love that endures forever [Psalm 136:23]. His love is seen in His faithfulness and longsuffering. And most important and difficult for us to understand, His love is not conditioned on our behavior. It is an unconditional love and it does not change because of circumstances.

He does not forget us. We are always before Him and His presence is with us through the Holy Spirit, a seal of our inheritance. Regardless of our feelings and senses and what we are experiencing, He is always with us.

“See, I have engraved you on the palms of My hands,
your walls are ever before Me”
Isaiah 49:16
