THE CROSS

Day 198

“As for me, God forbid that I should boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of that cross, my interest in all the attractive things of the world was killed long ago, and the world’s interest in me is also long dead.” Galatians 6:14

One can only surmise what the Father and Son talked about in heaven when it came time to redeem mankind. The whole thought of God subjecting Himself to human flesh, living 33 years on the earth, and then abject rejection ending in a torturous death is beyond our understanding. Yet, God the Father determined it before time—“But God, following his prearranged plan, let you use the Roman government to nail him to the cross and murder him” Acts 2:23 [LB]. Jesus was the Lamb of God.

We think about the cross more in a historical context or as a passing mention rather than meditating on its meaning to us. We [should] know that we were purchased and set free through Christ’s redemptive work, but, that is not all the cross infers. Paul declares it made him a dead man to the world. That is opposite of how most of us live. That position can only come to us when we have looked into the depth of the cross and understood the price that was paid for our redemption.

Do you want to know the heart of the Father? The cross is the center of God’s plan and it reveals His very character to us. One writer called the cross “love in excess,” probably because our love is so faulty. Actually, the cross is what true love is all about. And when recognize that compelling love, the world suddenly has nothing to offer.

“My constant boast is God. I can never thank you enough!” Psalm 44:8

LOVE OPPOSES US

Day 197

“I have come here to oppose you because
your path before me is a reckless one”
Numbers 22:33

Sometimes God opposes us.

God will not permit us to be consumed by our own devices. In our self-sufficiency and independence we often are blinded by our own thoughts, desires and plans. Balaam had that problem. Even though he sought the Lord, his motives in carrying out the Lord’s direction were wrong. Balaam was occupied with the honor and riches he was promised instead of exactly heeding God’s direction. This is a great danger.

How many of us are eager to do God’s will. We pray to get direction. We fulfill scriptural commands. Yet, in the process our motives and desires are of the flesh. Our earthliness is mixed in with God’s labor and purposes. An evangelist once announced he prayed and had a plan to convert everyone in the world. All we needed to do now was pray and get God interested! Sadly, many hearing him believed in what he said.

God loved Balaam and because He loved him, he stood in His way and opposed him. Three times he attempted to stop Balaam. Yet, Balaam resisted, blinded by his own thoughts. The donkey had served him all his life and yet Balaam didn’t see his behavior as a sign. He got very angry. Finally the Lord caused the donkey to speak! When the Lord opened his eyes, he then knew how blind he was. Yes, God’s love compelled Him to stop Balaam before he was destroyed.

Prayer

Father help us to be pure of heart in all our
labor before you so that our motives
and desires are for You only. Amen.

WHO WE ARE

Day 196

“We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes,
and we looked the same to them”
Numbers 13:33

What has changed?

God not only set His people free, He gave them provision for every step of the way. And the proof of His promise was in their hands; “…they cut off a branch bearing a single cluster of grapes. Two of them carried it on a pole between them, along with some pomegranates and figs.”

Yet, when problems mount, crises comes, and there seemingly is a mountain before us, we suddenly see ourselves as weak, powerless, and defeated. And all these are suddenly giants in our life! What has changed? It certainly isn’t God who has changed. He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Our heart fails us! What a contradiction! We suddenly are a defeated people that are led to accusing God of not keeping us. We’re holding the fruit of the land in our hand, His provision and treasures for us while declaring, it’s all over and we’re finished.

How foolish we are! Even if God permits circumstances in our life that are troubling, His promise is that He will take us through them and we will emerge untouched. Nothing happens in our lives except what He has permitted. And He declares for those who love Him that it is to our good. Stand up and be courageous, you are a son of God and all is well. He is your God and is with you to the end.

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name; you are mine.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
When you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned;
The flames will not set you ablaze.”
Isaiah 43:1b-2

HIS SPECIAL FAVOR

Friday, September 17th, 2010

Day 195

“I will extol Thee, my God, O King;
and I will bless Thy name for ever and ever”
Psalm 145:1

The greatness of God’s favor towards us is unsearchable. We do not know the depth of all His works on our behalf. These are of such a magnitude that it would be hard to contain the knowledge of it all. Who is a God like our God who first loved us? Where in all this earth and throughout our lifetime has such a profound and deep love ever been seen? There is nothing in our humanity that is able to come close to expressing this greatness of our God.

This greatness is magnified by His special favor to His children. He first loved us when we were unlovable. His goodness brought graciousness, compassion and mercy to us. These came to us in gentleness and because of it He has made us great in Him. Yet, even as His children, we sometimes are unaware of how He keeps us. We easily live within ourselves. But, His goodness is to all and His tender mercies surround us in our life. He upholds all that fall and raises up those bowed down.

The Israelites in the wilderness forsake Him, but He continued to give them provision. He satisfies the desire of every living thing. Even in our sins, He is kind to us, patiently waiting for us to see the error of our ways. He even seems reluctant to chastise until there are no other options. This is His greatness and His glory towards us. His love is beyond understanding.

“My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord:
and let all flesh bless His Holy name for ever and ever”
Psalm 145:21

HIS THUNDERINGS

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

Day 194

He hurls arrows of light, taking sure and accurate aim.
The High God roars in the thunder, angry against evil.
Job 36:33

The New Living Translation puts it this way; “He fills his hands with lightening bolts and hurls each at its target. The thunder announces his presence; the storm announces his indignant anger.”

One can never understand the fullness of God’s mercy until they have seen their own wickedness and corruption and realize how patient God has been with them. God’s mercy is so great that He even withholds our seeing the depth of our own depravity.

Our God is passionate about His children. So much so, that He will not permit us to stay in captivity. Another translation of the above verse shows His passion; “And the thunder tells of His anger against sin.” He comes with fire in His eyes to burn away sin in His children. His anger is against our enemies that put us in captivity – “He rescues me from my enemies” [Psalm 18:48], and “The Lord hath sworn by His right hand, and by the arm of His strength, Surely I will no more give thy corn to be meat for thine enemies” [Isaiah 62:8].

He comes with fire in His eyes to deliver us, yet to us He comes as the Lamb of God, slain before the foundation of the world, making provision for us in His mercy seat. We are covered by Him that we should be holy and without blame before Him [Ephesians 1:4]. Through His blood we have forgiveness of sin and continuous cleansing. Oh, yes – He is our Lover.

“That we should be saved from our enemies,
and from the hand of all that hate us”
Luke 1:71

THE MOST HOLY PLACE

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Day 193

“I will meet with you”
Exodus 25:22

Jesus is coming.

He wants to meet with you.

He is going to meet you with His mercy-seat.

And, He is going to tear down everything in you that impedes and hinders you from meeting Him.

You are His and He has come to make you as He is. There is only one focus in The Most Holy Place: God Himself. Not Satan, not the world, not the flesh. And, not your sins. It is He Himself. The Father beholds His Son and He is passionate about you. He is jealous about you. He will not share you with anyone or anything else.

Listen saints; He created you to be His and He has had enough with the things that have captured you. Man has tried to put God in a box. We have impaired ourselves with a religious system and practices that box God into a Sunday package. We have perceptions and beliefs about God that distort a true picture of who He really is to us. We practice a dichotomy of God up there and us down here. We believe in self-realization, self-strength, and self sufficiency instead of resting purely on Him. We see Him as an answer Man to get us through and out of things instead of a Friend. We give Satan credit for everything wrong instead of seeing him as a defeated enemy. The list goes on and on.

Guess what? He’s had enough. He’s coming and is going to set you free. He wants His child back. He’s coming with fire in His eyes and will burn away everything that isn’t His. He will refine and purify you, cleansing your house and setting it in order. Praise God!

“They will be mine, says the Lord Almighty”
Malachi 3:17

HE DELIVERS ME

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

Day 192

“He is my refuge, my place of safety;
he is my God, and I am trusting Him”
Psalm 91:2

This is the place we should be in at all times. But to be there we have to be dwelling and resting in God our Father. How can we know Him unless our relationship is mature? The prodigal son’s brother didn’t know his father, yet he had everything. So when it came to mercy, he had none and got angry with his father for receiving his brother back! He lived in his father’s house and didn’t trust him!

It’s possible to taste of God’s refuge and safety. It’s possible to receive grace and mercy from Him, yet not really know Him. When it comes to going through turbulent waters, we must have the revelation and understanding of our Father’s almighty power, protection, grace and mercy in our lives. We need to know His character and integrity beyond any shadow of a doubt. And that only comes from a mature relationship and intimacy with Him.

“He who dwells . . .” tells it all. It is that Christian who will find shelter, rest, refuge and complete total trust in the Lord, knowing He is our fortress. Then, and only then, will you pass through the waters and fire untouched. He is our God and He will deliver you.

“If you make the LORD your refuge, if you make the Most
High your shelter, no evil will conquer you;
no plague will come near your dwelling.”
Psalm 91:9-10

GOD IS LOVE

Monday, September 13th, 2010

Day 191

“God is love, and all who live in love
live in God, and God lives in them”
1 John 4:16

You were redeemed because of God’s love. It was His love that pursued you throughout your life until you were fully restored to Him. It is His love that continues to abide in you and work out your salvation. It is His love that keeps you.

God’s love is all powerful. When we were unacceptable, unloving and in our sin, God first loved us. It was His loving us that enabled us to respond to His call. Many of us weren’t even looking for Him, yet He came to rescue and restores us. And, with that restoration He has filled us with His love through the Holy Spirit. What a privilege – we are partakers of His nature! He has given us His love with which He loved us! Glory!

This love transforms. It transforms us and as we love others, we are filled again and again. Paul says if we do not have love, we are bankrupt. Our life then is to be one of love. It covers a multitude of sins. It will never fail. And love will last forever. This love is His glory.

“Love never gives up, never loses faith, is
always hopeful, and endures through every
circumstance. Love will last forever…”
1 Corinthians 13

OUR PEACE

Our Peace

Day 190

“And the peace of God, which passes
all understanding, shall keep your
hearts and minds through Jesus Christ”
Philippians 4:7

Great peace reigns in us when we know and understand the sovereignty of God. Nothing, absolutely nothing, can shake or dislodge us from our peace in God with this knowledge. We are never in the power of blind forces as God’s children. Circumstances, luck, fortune, chance, and fate do not direct us or force us to follow blind paths.

All that happens to us is divinely planned. Each event of our life is a new opportunity to walk in faith trusting, obeying and rejoicing, knowing that it is for our spiritual and eternal good and welfare; “We know that all things work together for good to them that love God . . .” [Romans 8:28]. God is involved in every event of life, directing all things to their appointed end. He is completely in control and charge of our world. This is so because all is designed to bring glory to Himself.

We can never have rest or walk in His peace until we come to this knowledge. John says he knows and relies on the love of God. That should be our position. Natural man,and even Christians, do not believe in the total sovereignty of God. Some acknowledge it, but when it comes down to it, they believe man has a hand in it. How it goes against our sinful nature! Yet, God’s ultimate glory is the real issue. And that glory is only achieved through His sovereignty.

“He does according to His will in the host of heaven
and among the inhabitants of the earth”
Daniel 4:35

NUMBERED WITH TRANSGRESSORS

Saturday, September 11th, 2010

Day 189

“It is enough”
Luke 38:1

What a rebuke!

Christ is instructing His disciples about the change that was to take place and the fulfillment of Isaiah 53 [about Him]. Jesus Christ, the Second Person of the Trinity, Son of God, incarnate Man is about to become numbered with the transgressors. The hatred of God, the wickedness of man and the evil one are about to be poured out on Christ.

Christ was preparing His disciples to bring the Gospel to others. They were now to strip themselves and go with what they had in their hand. No more would they be covered as children by the father. Now they would stand in their own right under His banner and carry out His work. Their provision now is not in ‘things,’ but in Him alone as their strength and help.

Yet, these men still focused on the natural and wrestled with His words! How much it’s like us.  Anything, but resting wholly in Him. Christ is about to take the wrath of your sin and all of mankind’s on Him, and they worry about little things! God has come out of heaven to set us free from sin and death and we worry about little things!!! He not only has set us free with salvation, He continues to redeem us with grace and mercy in our lives, lifting us out of the pit when we fall. ‘IT IS ENOUGH,’ He says. Lift your head up, the King of Glory has come.

“Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye
lift up, ye everlasting doors and the;
King of Glory shall come in”
Psalm 24:7
