Day 120
“And he was angry”
Luke 15:28
We know the story about the Prodigal Son who returns home after squandering his fortune and hitting bottom. He found a merciful loving father who forgave him for his foolishness. There is another part to this parable that bears a hard message for many. The elder son did not leave home and did not reject his father. But, on the joyous reunion of the father with his lost son, the elder brother was angry. He wouldn’t go in the house for the feast and the father had to come out. His response to his anger tells the whole story; “Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine” [verse 31].
Why didn’t the elder son know this? The younger son’s ignorance of his father’s nature can be excused, but how could the elder son so misjudge the father? He lived on the father’s land, partook of the father’s provision each day, labored in his fields, and knew the inner workings of his kingdom. How could he, who was so close and had great authority and responsibility, not know his father? Yet, he stood angry and confused. What could have he missed all those years?
Today there are many elder sons who know the Father, His kingdom, work, and even His wonders, miracles, and healing. But they have missed the most important part – a relationship with the Father Himself! Are not the gifts, ministries, blessings and all of God’s wonders intended for one purpose – to bring us to the place of perfect fellowship with our Father? Is that not why our Lord and Savior gave His life? The Father’s heart is crying out to His elder sons to come home. Our life is to be centered on Him alone.
“I am with thee, and will keep thee
in all places whither thou goest”
